A SPECTACULAR DAY HIKE TO REFUGIO FREY IN PHOTOS, PATAGONIA
Thinking about hiking to Refugio Frey in Bariloche, Argentina?
Refugio Frey is one of the most spectacular hikes from Bariloche. Either a day trip or an overnight stay, these snow-topped mountains are stunning.
It's not the easiest, taking 4 hours each way with some steep slopes to climb. Some good hiking gear is a must! But it's so worth it at the top on a gorgeous sunny day. And if you're feeling daring you can even take a dip in the lake to cool off!
The day hike to Refugio Frey
Laguna Tonchek at the top
Strolling through the mountains and forests, the views are incredible.
It doesn't take long before you'll want to start looking back at the views.
Gorgeous lakes!!
Wow!!
And the mountains!!
If you decide to stay overnight at Refugio Frey, be sure to reserve in advance. Especially in the months of January and February.
The dorm room is a large mattress on the floor. You can rent sleeping bags there or bring your own. Camping is free.
You can reserve your spot here.
At the top, Laguna Tonchek is beautiful. If you book in advance, a rock climbing session is an amazing way to see the scenery from above.
After chilling by the lake with our lunches, we were tipped off by our hostel to hike the last part to Laguna Schmoll. The hiking trail begins on the other side of the lake, going up and over Frey.
Stunning backdrops!
Hiking over the snowy mountains
We could see the red dots indicating that there was a trail. But, it involved a heck of a lot of climbing and bouldering until we were on a clear path.
Hesitating we decided to go up. And it was amazing!!
Follow the hiking trail or if in doubt, make your own up!
We met two Argentinians who were heading over these mountains to another lake. The trail never ends!

The hiking trail continues over that mountain!!
Soaking up the sun and not wanting to miss the last bus back, we started our descent.
Hiking poles are useful for this part, as it can be pretty slippery.

Getting to Refugio Frey
Route 1: The traditional trail. Take bus number 55 opposite Manush on Avenida Pioneros. The trail starts at the car park opposite the ski lifts. As it's a long hike to do in one day, it's best to leave early.
Route 2: The Slovenian Trail. Take bus number 50 to Lago Gutiérrez. The trail starts by the campsite along the gravelled road.
Route 3: Only available in summer. Take the cable car to R.Lynch or Punto Princesa where the trail starts. You need to take the bus to the base of Cerro Catedrale. The hike is much longer, at around 4-6 hours.
Stunning!
