WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE 24 HOURS IN COLONIA, URUGUAY
Looking for things to do and see in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay? Or maybe you're thinking about a day trip from Buenos Aires?
After living in Buenos Aires to give me a bit of a break from hiking in Patagonia, I got on a boat to Uruguay and spent a few days exploring Colonia del Sacramento and Montevideo.
If you have 24 hours in Colonia, here are some recommendations for things you can get up to.

Sunsets!
Visit the Old Town
Stepping off the ferry, it's about a 15-20 minute walk to the Old Town. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, founded by the Portuguese in 1680, the architecture has an infusion of Portuguese and Spanish styles.
With a camera in hand, it's easy to get lost for a couple of hours snapping away in front of historic walls and buildings.
El Faro Lighthouse
The view from the top of the lighthouse has a great view of the city. On a clear day you might even see the skyline of Buenos Aires in the distance.
There are loads of nice restaurants and cafes in the area, making it a good stopping point for a latte or two.

Head to the harbour
Surrounded by water, on a sunny day, it's pretty cool just to chill out with a nice book. There are a few good spots around Muelle de Madera.
Rent a golf buggy or tag along with someone who has
Burning in the sunshine of a really hot summers day, I was really happy to explore the city in a golf buggy.
Asking a random stranger from Chile to take some pictures, he then asked if I wanted to head around town with him.
Picking up a Venezuelan guy who needed a ride too, it's a fun way to explore the town when you're short on time!
That’s what I love about travel. It doesn’t take long to build new relationships and bridges. I spoke little Spanish and he spoke little English but somehow we found a way to hang out and become friends!

Chill at the beach
If you walk for 20-30 minutes out of town, there are some really nice beaches along the coastline.
Apart from the day I spent at Viña del Mar, it was great to relax and get some beach time!
The sand is surprisingly fine running through my toes and the water is some of the warmest waters I experienced in South America! Even if it does look a bit murky!

How long do you need in Colonia del Sacramento?
I would say 4-5 hours is enough, if you have longer spending some time at the beaches is a great way to relax.
From Buenos Aires it is definitely possible to do a day trip and they also accept Argentinian Pesos in town, although at a very unfavourable exchange rate.
How to get to there?
You can get the ferry direct from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento and it only takes one hour.

Head directly to Montevideo from Buenos Aires, is also possible by boat, with a journey time of 3 hours.

There are regular buses that go from Colonia to Montevideo. There's no need to pre-book, you can buy tickets at the bus terminal.
A bus ticket costs around UYU 395 (£10 / $12) and journey time is 3 hours.

Is Uruguay expensive?
Coming from neighbouring Buenos Aires, where you definitely get more for your buck, Uruguay will be more expensive.
During the peak months of summer, January and February, many Argentinians and Brazilians choose to go on holiday to Uruguay, hiking up the prices.

I spent between $25-50 US a day, on a strict budget, eating in and not including travel costs between cities or an expensive 3 am Uber to the airport.
